yamaha qy700 controls a roland vs1680
my beloved yahama qy 700 is now controlling a roland vs1680 via mmc and midi cc. the roland vs1680 answers with mtc (midi time code), that gives me the opportunity to record 16 tracks of audio and 32 tracks of midi simultaneously!
even though this wonderfull combination is possible since 1998, it opens a whole new world to me right now, 14 years later. these old devices are still fantastic and they will still be fantastic even if the world moves on, creating more amounts of brand new state of the art gear.
if it comes to the mixdown of a song. you somtimes need an automation of some parameters like volume, pan or effect send. the internal options of the roland vs1680 kind of drove me to despair. but then i tried out the yamaha qy700 to do the automation for me. and it worked! the yamaha qy700 can control the 16 channels of the roland vs 1680 via midi cc and sysex.
the vs1680 is able to transmit sysex data during playback. the yamaha qy700 is able to record that. i recorded the pan, effect send, effect pan, and volume parameters of a channel into the qy700 via sysex on the fly. thats sooooo easy!
this kind of working is outdated. for sure. but if i manage to get more and more into this outdated gear i will be able to achieve whatever i want. learning midi and sysex and mtc and midi cc is so amazing and satisfying to me.
during the last weeks and months i found myself reading owners manuals in bed at night! help! i am a geek! i am obsessed! i read midi implementation charts! i get lost in midi! i dream of creating wave sequences!
